Should I still fertilize in the winter?

Plant Parent

I live in Northern California where the winters are mild. My plants continue getting new growth as they still see the sun most days. Should I still be fertilizing my plants or not?

I fertilize when I see active growth. I stop when the plant takes a rest. Observe your plants and do the same – indoor plants do not experience a true dormancy state. This is done more easily if you’re mixing the fertilizer into your water as you water the plants as opposed to using a slow-release type left in the soil.

Thank you so much for the information. I have your book it’s so helpful!!

When dealing with indoor plants, fertilizer is necessary when you see active growth. Don’t base your decision to fertilize entirely on seasonality.
