  • Propagation of Philodendron Silver

Problem: the original philodendron silver plant is looking quite bare near the pot but still has several healthy vines – this is completely a matter of opinion, if you like the way your plant looks, then no need to change it.

  • How to ID Some plants with Google

A good proportion of questions I receive involve identifying a plant. I’m pretty familiar with most common house plants but there are times when I just can’t remember a name, even though I’ve seen it before. Here, I will go through one example of how I found the name of a plant with only a picture.

  • BASICS: Air Plant Care 101

Air plants are a lot like Pokemon: there’s a strong desire for a “gotta catch ’em all” mentality. But please, for the love of plants, make sure you can provide the right conditions for them.  Here’s what you need to know.

  • Plant Parenthood: Setting Expectations

Congratulations, you just bought your first house plant!  The store clerk quickly gave you some vague instructions beginning with “these are super easy to take care of…”

  • Plant Parenthood 101

If you only read one article, make it this one: although these factors are in separate paragraphs, they are all interdependent and need to be in BALANCE for a healthy, thriving plant (more on this in another article).

What a difference 1 month outside can do! My Aeon What a difference 1 month outside can do!

My Aeonium 'kiwi' spent the long winter months inside with poor lighting (around 1 hour direct sun and indirect light in the 100-200 FC range) so I was excited when I could finally move it outside. I repotted it with fresh soil and fertilizer (3-1-2) - this photo is one month ago

The time outside has been super productive! Each rosette has grown new leaves with great color!

The winter leaves (outer most leaves) are plain green but the newest growth (center) is showing the desired triple coloration (green/yellow/pink). This new growth occurred outside in 'Shade' - which is 3 hours of direct sun and sun filtered through leaves the rest of the day.

There are even new rosettes growing off the side of larger ones!

New peace lily flowers emerge from the back of a l New peace lily flowers emerge from the back of a leaf petiole - it looks like the leaf is pregnant
-
This only happens once the newest leaf has unfurled - existing, older leaves don't produce flowers
-
So in order to get as many new flowers as possible, you need the plant to grow as many new leaves as possible. Encouraging new leaf growth starts with light
-
I've had this peace lily for over 10 years so it has been through many different lighting conditions but if I had to summarize the two lighting contexts where it did the best, I'd say:
-
Natural light, indoors: 1-2 hours direct sun + indirect light in the 200-400 FC range
-
Grow light (white LED): 400 FC x 14 hours a day
-
Watered with 3-1-2 fertilizer whenever the soil was about halfway dry (trying not to let it wilt for too long)
